Invest in Self. Put in the time. Do work involved in the development of your intellectual knowledge

Invest in yourself. Put in the time. Actually, do the work involved in the development of your intellectual knowledge. By Marjorie A. Gordon-DeLee, MA ( November 28, 2018)

Why be jealous of a person who rises to success when everyone has the exact same opportunity in life. No, everyone will not enjoy the same successes, but the successes each individual have after putting in the time, diligently working hard to learn new information that will enhance their personal and professional developmental growth are unique to them. Their success is normally in what their passion is; what the person is passionate about; what they care more deeply about than anything else. Each person needs to discover what they are passionate about and develop oneself in being one of the most skillful and knowledgeable people on this subject matter or several subject matters. We should never limit ourselves to just one area.

We should never cheat to gain a degree, a piece of paper, without putting in the actual time to do the coursework involved to learn new skills and ideas. Once we have that college degree in hand or that certificate, the meaning behind having this document with our names on it is that we have learned the knowledge that qualifies us to perform the work. People who plagiarize are not displaying that they are individuals that possess honesty and integrity.

In an article written by Hudgens, (n.d.).), the literature reveals:

“Cheating is an epidemic in America’s high schools and colleges. Everyone cheats. Okay, maybe not everyone. But today more students are cheating.”

This article further asserts:

But today academic dishonesty is easier, more wide-spread, and more problematic, in part, because it isn’t even considered cheating. As a teacher, I often hear students brag about cheating as if it’s a game to be played. Who can come up with the cleverest way to cheat? Who can best outsmart the teacher? Who can get away with the most? At times it seems as if students take more pride in cheating than they do in actually learning or achieving anything. If this cheating trend continues, our culture and our kids could be in serious trouble.
The author shares five (5) reasons that cheating hurts students now and will lead to a troubling future:
1. Cheating is not a victimless crime
2. Cheating creates a culture of mistrust
3. Cheating leads to a cutting corners mentality
4. Cheating is a broken window
5. Cheating devalues education

These statements are all too true about the high school students and in the above quote and has been going on for quite some time. As a college student, university employee, and an Adjunct Professor, I have heard the discussions of purchasing written papers exchanging between students and merely eliminating one name and replacing with another name. There was no knowledge learned from the course that was taken that could be used in the workforce, but only a letter grade for the mere purpose of passing a course gaining not any intellectual knowledge in the scheme of it all.

What people are doing when they cheat on writing a research paper or copy from someone else homework assignment is sabotaging their own professional growth. The other person actually took the time to study and learned the material that honestly earned them the grade that they received. Therefore, this individual is walking away from that course with solid knowledge gained through their dedication and effort to donate the time to learn. When a person cheats on doing their school work, they are not learning anything; thereby, will not be able to fulfill the requirements of the job in which they have applied for.

This is misleading information to employers and causes the employer more problems due to hiring an unqualified individual who portrayed themselves as someone who would be a valuable asset to the organization or to the company. Employers are searching for people who will come into the organization with the skills necessary to perform the job in which they have applied for. If one does not have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to start with, then start one’s work journey from the bottom and work your way up until the adequate knowledge, skills and abilities have been gained. Do not apply for positions as a leader or any other position for that fact and expect to get trained. Studying, practicing, putting in the time to do the hard work is what is necessary to possess in obtaining any leadership role. With that said, do not lie on one’s resumes either.

The LiveCareer Staff Writer provides an explanation for why it is not a good idea to live on one’s resume below:

In the short term, it can be tempting to tell a lie in your resume. In the long term, it is always a bad idea. When you are conducting a job search and you come upon a job you think that you would love, it can be frustrating to discover that there are some requirements for the job that you don’t think you can meet. It’s human nature to be tempted under those circumstances to fudge a little on your resume and suggest that you have more skills or greater experience than you really do. However, the short-term gains you might make in landing the job through deception can have long-term consequences that may do serious damage to your career.
Facts Are Stubborn Things
Some people put inaccuracies in their resume because they think no one will bother to go to the trouble to check whether or not what you say is true. Maybe in the past you could get away with that, but today, it is simply too easy for prospective employers to use search engines and to email your schools and past employers to see if what you say is true. If even minor inconsistencies are discovered, that can be sufficient to completely eliminate you from further consideration for the job.
Actions Speak Louder Than Words
Even if you somehow manage to get past the background check with the lie in your resume intact, a serious problem still awaits you once you start the job. If you said you had certain skills or experiences on your resume, you can be sure your employer will expect you demonstrate those abilities on the job. But if you can’t really do what you said you could on your resume, then that will soon become apparent and you will fired. Not only will you lose your dream job, but the firing will cast a shadow over your future job searches.
Faking It Isn’t Fun
Maybe you believe that you can successfully deceive your employer and prevent them from realizing you can’t do what your resume claims you can. But even if your deception is successful, think of what a nightmare it will be to go to work everyday and try to fool everyone into thinking that you are competent. The stress alone is likely to spoil any enjoyment you would otherwise get out of the job. Simply keeping your deceptions straight so that you don’t contradict yourself will be a challenge. Remember the old saying, “Oh, what a tangled web we weave, whenever we attempt to deceive.”
Never Lie in Your Resume
People who try to outsmart potential employers by attempting to lie in their resume usually discover that the only person they have outsmarted is themselves. Fortunately, there are honest ways to compensate for gaps in your resume if you know what you’re doing. Relying on a resume builder or seeking out professional tips on creating an effective resume can show you the ways to always put your best foot forward. The truth is, most employers will consider applicants that don’t meet 100% of their ideal qualifications, provided your strengths in other areas are presented effectively. In any case, to lie in your resume is never the solution (Source: LiveCareer Staff Writer).

Do not waste valuable time that should be donated to studying. It does not add any value to one’s life if this individual is wanting to grow professionally and as a person. Because as one learns by using their own efforts (their own sweat and tears) that individual is building on their self-esteem, self-worth, and confidence. They will not bring the insecurities into the workplace which brings about hostility in the workforce. This is how it begins. Insecure, unqualified employees lash out and bullies those employees who have a proven record and possesses the knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary to perform the job at hand and performs it well.

When one has confidence in self, it resonates with everyone that this individual comes into contact with. Other people can actually tell when someone else has insecurities by their actions and by their words. Life is not gaining what one wants, climbing to the top of the ladder by taking the easy way around. An individual must put in the time and work for whatever it is that they want to achieve in life. It is all in the choices that we make along the path of life.
